GAME PROTECTION
PROSECUTIONS AT PALMERSTON. Palmerston North, February 13. Before Mr. J. L. Stout, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court at Palmerston North this morning, L. McKeown, a butcher at Awapuni, was charged with being in possession of native ducks, contrary to the Animals and Game Protection Act. A similar charge was preferred against W.' I. Lovelock for being in possession of five grey ducks. Thomas Andrews, ranger for the Wellington Acclimatisation Society, . said that on January 12 he saw two boys chasing ducks on the Awapuni lagoon, and tliis had been going on for some time. He interviewed the fathers of the boys, and the ducks were handed over to him. In evidence William Lovelock stated that he knew his son had been taking the ducks, But had been unaware that the law was being broken, as the ducks were on his propertv. The Magistrate fined Lovelock £2 10s., with costs at 10s. and witness’s expenses 15s. McKeown, who did not appear, was fined a similar amount.
