The ladies’ swimming carnival was held in warm, bright weather. The 100 yards championship of New South Wales resulted: Miss Ena Stockley (New Zealand), 1: Miss Jean Cocks (Bondi), 2; Miss B. Taw (Sydney), 3. Miss Stocklcy set a hot pace from an even start and had a comfortable lead at the end of fifty yards, with the others almost in line. The New Zealander then went further ahead and never looked .like being defeated, winning most comfortably. It was obvious throughout the race that the pace of Miss Stockley was out of tho ordinary. Tier time, Imin. 6 l-ssec, was only onefifth of a second outside the Australian record, held by Miss Fanny Durack. 440 Yards New South "Wales Championship.—Miss K. Miller (New Zealand), 1; Miss E. Davey, 2; Miss B. Taw, 3. Miss Davey led in the early part of tlie race from Miss Miller, being three yards ahead at 220 yards, but before the swimmers had reached 330 yards Miss Miller began to move up, putting on a phenomenal burst, and caught Miss Davev twenty-five yards from the finish. There was a desperate-struggle to the touch, the New Zealander gaining the judge’s verdict, though many spectators .were under the impression that it was a dead heat. Miss Taw was twelve yards away. Time, 6min. 3 9-10 sec—half a second slower than Miss Fanny Durack’s Australian record. . Miss Ella Smith won the State diving championship. ATKINSON BEATS LINDSAY BY Telegraph.—press aisociation. Christchurch, February 12. At a carnival held by the East Christchurch Swimming Club on Saturday the veteran C. Atkinson won the 50 yards championship of Canterbury, beating D. P. Lindsay very comfortably. R. Floyd was third. Time, 28 seconds.
