ENGINEERS FAREWELLED

FUNCTION AT MARINE INSTITUTE Mr. J. Smith, superintending engineer of the Union Steam Ship Company, was farewelled by members of the Marine Engineers’ Institute last night, prior to his departure for England. Mr. If. Galloway, president of the institute, presided. Amongst those present were the Prime Minister (Right Hon. J. G. Coates), Sir John Luke, M.P., Mr. C. M. Luke, Mr. A. Levestam, Mr. A. S. Mitchell, Messrs. J. Dunlop and W. Somerville (Mr. Smith's assistants), Mr. W. G. Smith, industrial superintendent of the Union Company, Mr. W. Somerville, secretary of the Marine Engineers’ Institute, and many of Mr. Smith's former associates. Mr. A. W. Wheeler, assistant general manager ■.. of the company, who was also to have been farewelled, was unable to be present owing to illness. Mr. Galloway eulogised the excellent work of Mr. Smith during his connection with the company, which he joined in 1885, when it bought out the “Black Diamond Line,” to which Mr. Smith was attached. Mr. Galloway wished the guest the best of luck on his trip abroad, and presented him with the emblem of the Institute. Mr. A. Levestam proposed the health of Mr. Smith, with whom he had been associated for many years. The Primo Minister wished “bon voyage” to Mr. Smith. He asked that his wishes should be conveyed to Air. Wheeler, and stated that it was pleasing to think what splendid work was being done by bold men. Mr. Coates spoke in the highest terms of the Union Company’s services, saying that, he defied anyone to find a ferry service to equal that run between Wellington and Lyttelton. (Applause.) The toast of the Institute was proposed by Sir John Lake, and responded to by Mr. W. Somerville. Several musical items were given by members of the Lyric Quartet, and Mr. Whittle acted as accompanist. Mr. Wheeler and Mr. Smith will leave to-morrow night for Auckland, where they are to join the Aorangi.
