FRENCHMEN WIN
BOROTRA BEATS PATTERSON
DOUBLES TO BRUGNON AND BOUSSUS BY Telegraph.—Press association. (Copyright.) (Rec. February 10, 11.35 p.m.) Melbourne, February 10. The tennis tests were continued in fine and cool weather. In the singles J. Brugnon beat H. Hopman, 6—3, 6—o; J. Borotra beat G. L. Patterson, 7—5, 7—5. In the doubles J. Brugnon and C. Boussus beat J. Crawford and H. Hopman, 6—4, 6—l. Hopman in the singles was right out of form, and was repeatedly worked out of position. He never looked like winning against the Frenchman, who played at the top of his form. There was great interest in the game between Patterson and Borotra as the two had not yet met during the tour, and it was thought the result might give an indication of Australia’s Davis Cup chances. Both played superb tennis, and the game was. most hardly fought, but Patterson was guilty of many errors and finally lost the match with a double fault.
[Australian papers to hand show that Patterson played in the Australian singles championship, and beat Down in the first round 6—2, 6—l, 6—l, but nothing was apparently sent concerning him by the cables. It is interesting to note- that in the Australian championships V. E. Page (Tasmania), well known in New Zealand, having resided in several parts of the Dominion, was only beaten by H. Hopman in five sets in the second round, the scores being 5—7, 6—2, 4—6, 6—2, 6—3.—“ Fore hand.”]
