Southland, commenced here today in beautiful weather. Ideal ground conditions prevail. The home side batted first, antic enturics by Zimmerman and Carrington carried the. total to 412 before the side was dismissed. Uttley and McDonald also were playing soundly when dismissed. The innings occupied 218 minutes. Agnew was the only bowler to prove troublesome. In the first innings the visitors collapsed, and they were dismissed for 81 runs in 95 minutes. Zimmerman 'clean bowling five for four. Southland followed on and shaped better. They had scored 37 nt the drawing of stumps without loss. Scores are as follow:—
