DANNEVIRKE SHOW

SUCCESSFUL OPENING DAY LARGE ENTRIES IN PRINCIPAL CLASSES LIST OF PRIZE WINNERS Dominion Special Service. Da nnevirke, February S. Favoured by excellent weather and large entries, the nineteenth annual show of the Danncvirke Agricultural and Pastoral Association, which was today opened on the association’s ground at Danncvirke, promises to be more successful even than in past years. The cattle, sheep, and horse classes are very strong, the cattle especially attracting a lot of attention.

Mr. C. E. Robertson, the judge of the Aberdeen Angus, was of the opinion that this section was excellent. The champion and reserve champion bulls were both high grade representatives of the breed, while the yearling bulls’ class was keenly contested, ami tbero was little to pick and choose between the placed animals. None of the yearling bulls, however, show the signs of a prospective champion. The females are also a good class. Although the champion went to Jas. W. Ellingham’s Celandine of Glenelg, she was not so typical as M. animal was the square built, low set Thomas’s Quaint of Matapihi. The latter type, and was prevented from taking the champion ribbon by possessing a humpy back and ribs. Mr. Robertson also judged the Hereford classes, and regretted the paucity of competition. The Jersey judge was most surprised with the quality and the improvement in his section. The animals exhibited would, he said, compare more than fav ourably with any of their breed in New Zealand. Mr. A. E. Washer stated that there were some very good exhibits in the dairy cattle classes. The entries were all Jerseys, the aged dairy cow and yearling heifers being particularly fine specimens. Mr. J. McGillivray found the younger fat cattle of good quality, but thought that the older cattle were slightly unsuitable for freezing purposes. Competition was not very keen in tho pig classes, but was exceptionally keen in the Romney classes. The other sheep

sections were also well represented. The poor pig entries were more than compensated for, however, by the high class animals.
