MURDER OF POLICEMAN

ARRESTED MEN IN COURT CHARGED WITH THEFT OF CAR London, February 6. William Kennedy and John Browne have been charged with the murder of Police Constable Gutteridge in Essex on September 26 last, when the body of the constable was found, notebook still m hand, lying in a lonely lane shot through both eyes. (Rec. February 7, 7.15 p.m.) London, February' 6. A dramatic surprise was sprung in the South-Western Police Court, when Kennedy and Browne appeared, charged ostensibly with the thett of a car. The Director of Public Prosecutions when the men’s names were called informed the Magistrate that the men would be charged with the murder of Constable Gutteridge. Such intense interest was manifested that the police had to force the crowd back from the pavement, and everyone was questioned before being allowed to enter the doors, each of which was guarded by’ four policemen, and policemen stood between the two men in the dock. Chief-Inspector Berrett gave evidence that when told that they would be charged, Kennedy did not reply, while Browne answered., “It is absurd. I know nothing about it.”
