VERDICT OF SUICIDE

DEATH IN T A WHARE.

Dominion Special Service.

Christchurch, February 7. Henry Harris, aged 46, a tally clerk, was found dead last night in a whare, at 15 Cambridge Terrace, which was full of gas. An inquest was held before Air. E. D. Alosley (Coroner) today. Dr. T. L.Crooke, who was called about 7 p.m., stated that lie found deceased reclining in a wicker chair alongside a shelf on which was a small gas stove. The tube of the gas stove was held in deceased’s right hand. His face and head were covered with a white pillow case, which was fastened securely about the neck. The windows were closed and the room smelt strongly of .gas. Death was due to gas poisoning. The police handed to the Coroner two letters written by the deceased, one giving information as to the whereabouts ci his money, and the other addressed to his wife, which he had written just before his death. Winnie Harris, deceased’s widow, residing at 80 Matipo Street, .Riccarton, said that on January 6 this year she refused to live with her husband, who had then left her. She had last seen him on Wednesday night.

The Coroner returned a verdict suicide by gas poisoning.
