MASSEY COLLEGE

MEETING OF COUNCIL PRINCIPAL APPOINTED Palmerston North, February 7. The Hon. G. Fowlds was in the chair at to-day’s meeting of the Massey Agricultural College Council, all the other members, Sir James Wilson, Professor Hunter, Messrs. Levi, Morton, Stuckey, N. Francis, Rodger, and Wells were present. Mr. Fowlds was re-elected chairman. Ten tenders were received for the erection of the dairy factory. These were considered and a resolution, which will not be made public until the Department has been consulted, was passed. The acting-principal, Professor Peren, reported on tlie progress of farm work, which lie considered to be satisfactory. Professor Riddel, dean of animal husbandry, reported regarding the new milking shed and equipment, on the milking herd, and on his investigations regarding daily variations in quantity of milk and butter-fat yielded by cows in the college herd. The college water supply was stated to be more than sufficient for the estimated needs, a flow of 728,000 gallons per day being struck at 407 feet. A sample had been sent to the Dominion Laboratory for analysis.

Approximately 30 applications, including some from Great Britain, Canada, and Australia, were received for the position of principal of the college, and after the question had been fully considered the council appointed the acting-principal, Professor Peren, to the position.

Advice was received from Victoria University College that the council of that college has amended the regulations of the Farmers’ Union scholarship so as to permit the scholarship to be open to students of Massey College. Moreover, there will be no residential restriction whatever placed on candidates.
