THEFT OF POSTAL PACKET
MAORI FOR SENTENCE. Palmerston North, February 7. “The accused is a young man, aged 22 years, and is exceedingly well known in the Waikanae district,” said Mr. J. Graham, in the Palmerston North Supreme Court this morning, when defending a Maori named Hika Punnanma Parata, who appeared for sentence on charges of theft of a postal packet, forgery and uttering. Accused, proceeded counsel, had been in the employ of the Postal Department for seven years, and during that time had held several responsible positions Up to the present time his conduct had been exemplary, and it was difficult to assign any reason for the lapse. The Probation Officer’s report, counsel understood, was a favourable one. His Honour, Mr. Justice MacGregor: Where is the report? The Probation Officer, Senior-Ser-geant O’Grady, stated that he had made no report, it not bein’; customarv to do so until one was asked for, and on hearing this His Honour refused to go further with the case until one was forthcoming, ndiourning the case until to-morrow morning.
