A swarm of bes which settled on a telegraph pole in front of the National Bank building, Shortland Street, at about 9.30 the other morning, attracted considerable attention throughout the day (says the “New Zealand Herald”). Although the bees hovered about the footpath, they showed no disposition to attack anyone, and workmen carrying out alterations to a nearby building proceeded with their task without interruption. No attempt was made to remove the bees, and they continued in occupation throughout the day. When evening fell they left as suddenly as they had arrived.

Not for years has the northern Egmont mountain road been in such excellent condition as it is at present (states the “Taranaki News”). For the past four or five weeks the contractors have been busy in shaping up the road and putting it into good condition to carry the traffic, while they are putting in the drain and get-aways, clearing the sides for the wider road, and getting out the metal. In a few days’ time the whole of the road should be in first-class order. This should prove welcome news to motorists, who have shied off the road recently on account of the loose metal and difficult going.
