Just a century ago, . when ° r Stephenson was discussing counsel, for the Liverpool and Manchester Rail way Bill the question of speed, he mentioned that he bad every hope of driv ine his locomotive at 20 miles an hour, Whereon William Brougham turned upon him angrily and told him that if he dll no, moderate his views and brin = his engine within reasonable speed, he would inevitably damn the whole thine, and he hiniself be regarded as a luantic fit only for Bedlam. One wonders what the same gentleman would have said about the speeds of to-day!
