Ting has sent a letter to the Secretariat declaring that \ the Cantonese Government alone is in a position to speak and negotiate on behalf of the Chinese people. The Kuo slin Tang’s principals demand the immediate abolition of al! unequal treaties between China and the Powers. The Belg<> Chinese Treaty cannot be renewed. The letter add’s: “We consider all negotiations with the Peking Government as non-existent, and the claims of Belgium and other Imperialist nations in the League null and void.” . BRITISH INTERVENTION UNTHINKABLE STATES MR. LAMPSON INTENDS TO CONFER WITH WAR LORDS • Peking, December 6. slr. Sliles Lampson, Britain’s new Envoy, addressing British business men at Shanghai, declared that intervention bv Britain was unthinkable. Mr. Lampson said that he had the widest powers to deal with the situation. He intended to confer with the rival war lords, with a view to an amicable settlement. He said that Britain was prepared to suffer more rather than intervene, in order to maintain trade. He declared that Britain’s designs m China were not political or territorial. At Hankow -the landing took place of all marines in co-operation with the civilian police forces in all the concessions. The threatened general strike and sabotage was staved off. In many instances the demands of the agitators were granted, and they were temporarily pacified. Trade, nevertheless, is paralysed, and vessels tied up have been confiscated by the military. The China slerchants Company, the largest of the Chinese companie® in the Far East, employing many foreigners, is going into liquidation owing to Sun Chuan Fang’s commandeering practically the whole fleet for transport of troops.
