CRITICAL SITUATION
RUMANIA ON BRINK OF POLITICAL VOLCANO POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS ON DEATH OF KING ATTITUDE OF PRINCE CAROL The situation in Rumania is described as most critical, the country being on the brink of a political volcano. King Ferdi. nand has undergone an operation for cancer, but it is believed that the operation cannot prolong life more than a few weeks. Bi Telegraph.—press association, copybight. London, December 6. An uucensored message from the frontier of Rumania states that the situation is most critical, and the country on the brink of a political volcano. The King is suffering from cancer, and even Dr. Hartmann’s operation to-day, though reported to have been successful, is unlikely to prolong his life more than a few weeks or months. Possible solutions of the turmoil which will follow the demise of the Crown are: (1) A Regency of Prince Nicholas, the Patriarch and the President of the Court of Cassation ; (2) the same Regency, plus the Queen; f 3) the Queen as head of the State, which will necessitate legislation as Rumania is under the Salic law; (4) Prince Carol as King; (5) Prince Carol as President of a Republic. The Premier, General Averescu, favours the first solution. 51. Bratianu and the Liberals favour the second or third. The Army and the National Party favour Prince Carol 'lts King. The Peasants’ Party like Prince Carol as President of a Republic. Prince Carol is only willing to return as President, as lie is determined to divorce Princess Helen . and marry Madame Lupescu. the Jewess, with whom he is living in Paris. If Prince Carol returns upon the King’s death, he will certainly be acclaimed with enthusiasm. No Government would be powerful enough to prevent an army coup d’etat in his favour. KING’S CONDITION CRITICAL Bucharest, December 6. King Ferdinand of Rumania has undergone an operation for cancer. His condition is critical.—Sydney “Sun" Cable.
