TORRENTIAL RAIN ON WEST COAST
WAIMAKARIRI FLOOD THREAT PASSES Dominion Special. Christchurch, December 7. Swollen bv torrential rains,ou the West Coast 'and at Arthur’s Pass, the Waimakariri River was reported today to be rising rapidly, and as the recent cold weather had given the hills a heavy coating of snow, it was anticipated that there would be another heavy flood. However, the warm nor’wester changed to a cool south-west wind earlv this afternoon, and light rain fell this evening. The latest , reports "state that the danger of the river rising abnormally is past. More trouble is reported on the railwavs on the Otira side owing to the heavv rain. A mixed train is held up tietween Jackson’s and Aicken’s, about five miles from Otira, owing to the river overflowing the line.
