ROAD PAVING
WORK AT MIRAMAR GOOD PROGRESS IN ADELAIDE ROAD With the continuance of high winds citizens could, with justification, wish that it were possible to employ a dozen hot-mix gangs and spend another halfmillion of money on the city streets. Gradually, however, an impression is being made in certain quarters by the paving gangs, though November was a very broken month for such work, owing to the number of wet days. During that month the city gang paved Abel Smith Street, upper Ghuznee Street, upper Vivian Street, and. a considerable portion of upper Willis Street, whilst preparation work was done in Aro Street and Stout Street. There has been some conjecture as to the two central kerbs of concrete (7 feet apart) which have been put down in Stout Street, These kerbs really divide the ordinary road on either side from the proposed tramway tracks of the future. The street will be paved up to these kerbs on either side with hot-mix in the ordinary way, whilst the central 7 feet strip will be given a sealing coat until such time as the tramways department lays the tracks that are to lead to the new railway station. The city paving gang is at present employed in Coutts Street, Kilbirnie Bast, and will continue to work along Broadway as far as the'tunnel.
Excellent work has been done by the other gang, which has been working cityward from Island Bay since the beginning of the season. It has reached an elevated point on Adelaide Road, at the rear of the Athletic Park, and, given fine weather, should be well on the way down to the John Street junction before Christmas. During October the gang working from the Petoue-plant completed the paving of the main Hutt Road (at Petone) and Jackson Street east (to the Pipe bridge). This gang.is now pursuing a northerly course on the main Hutt Road at Taita. .
What many citizens regard as the most urgent 'work on, the schedule is being neglected. This is Clyde Quay, between Courtenay Place and the city corporation yards, which was prepared for treatment three months ago, and was held up by the Kent Terrace injunction.
