SHIPWRIGHTS’ DISPUTE
POSITION OF WORKERS AT SEA. A Conciliation Council meeting was held on Fridav, and continued on Saturday, to consider the claims of shipwrights and ship carpenters for an increase of wages and improvements on general conditions of work. For the first time since the Arbitration Act came into operation claims were made on behalf of men who are employed at sea. All matters in dispute were arranged in a satisfactory manner, with the exception of those clauses relating to wages, overtime rates (in one section), and payment for "dirty work.” These points were referred to the Arbitration Court. The assessors were:—For the union: Messrs. J. McCallum, E. Goodwin, and W. Arbuthnott; for the employers: Messrs. W. G. Smith, E. E. Stonebanks, and A. Thomson. The Commissioner (Mr. P. Hally) presided.
