RETIRING SHORTLY

RAILWAY TRANSPORTA. TION HEAD MR. A. K. HARRIS’S SERVICE At the completion of 42 years’ service with the Railway Department, Mr. A. K. Harris, general superintendent of ( transportation, lias given notice of his intention to retire on. superannuation. Mr. Harris’s resignation will take effect as from February 1 next. Sir. Harris reached his position m the service via the hard work route. Fonder of work than of play, he developed a capacity for thoroughness in everything he undertook, and a habit of reaching finality with the most intricate problems he was called upon to solve. He joined the service as a cadet at Auckland in November, 1884, and reached the position of stationmaster at Papakura nine years later. Following a short period as assistant relieving officer at Auckland, he was transferred to Wanganui as clerk in the traffic manager’s office, and in June, 1907, came to the Transportation Office,’ Wellington. From 1908 to 1912 Mr. Harris served as traffic clerk at Auckland, and then went to Dunedin, subsequently being promoted to the position of assistant district traffic manager there. In 1917 he went to Christchurch in a similar capacity, and two years later became district traffic manager at Wanganui. Mr. Harris was transferred to Auckland on similar duties in February, 1922, and in February, 1924, .be was appointed general superintendent of transportation at Wellington, a position he has held since.
