WANGANUI NOTES
« Wanganui, December 4. The Bishop of Wellington (Dr. Sprott) arrived in Wanganui to-day, and will be the guest of the Rev. C. F. Pierce, Collegiate School, until Thursday. “All prizes and no blanks’’ is the motto of the City Council where ratepayers are concerned who have not attempted to pay their rates. The first ballot of the season has taken place, and 20 ratepayers drew marbles which will entitle them to inspect the interior of the Court prior to closing, down for Christmas holidays. The inspection will not be altogether free for the lucky drawers of marbles will be expected to contribute 7s. 6d. towards the cost of issuing the blue invitation forms. Mr. J. B. Porteous, formerly manager of the Wanganui Woollen Mills, has been appointed manager of the Roslyn Woollen Mills. Mr. Porteous will take up his duties early in January. During the past week the Minister of Public Works (Hon K. S. Williams) lias been visiting different portions of the Rangitikei electorate To-day members of the Wanganui County Council, in company with the Minister, visited Ngahatea, in the Upper Wangaeliu Valley. The party comprised the Minister and Messrs. W. S. Glenn, M.P., T. Hine, H. Collins, R. R. Dawson (engineer) , and T. M. Ball (Public Works Department). Its object was to study the uncompleted portion of the Wangaehu Valley Road. Only four miles remain to be formed to complete the road, which will link up with the Upper Valley Road at Pungatawa and furnish a direct route of approximately 60 miles from Wanganui to Karioi. Before he completes bis visit to this district the Minister will inspect the Parapara and Gentle Anne Ronds, and these trips will probably be made on Monday.
