Marton, December 3. The Marton Baby Carnival, organised in support of the Pluilket and restroom building scheme, was concluded this week and resulted in the sum of JEIIB2 se. 2d. being raised. The final position of candidates was as follows Farmers’ baby (Douglas Morrison), <£353; town and band baby (Brian Gracie), £306; Junction baby (Rex Ingram). .£286 12 a. 2d.; sports babv (Derrick Howard), <£236 Ifls. Including the donations to the general fund, the sum now ip hand towards the erection of the proposed building is £lllO 10s. 2d. A miraculous escape from serious injury was the experience of a young Taihape fanner. Mr. E. Loiirie, w-ho was ♦be .sole occupant of a car which dashed over a 25 foot bank at Koeke recently. At a sharp corner on the dangerbus road the ear skidded in loose metal and was soon off the highway. It turned turtle and was bad damaged but Mr. Lourie was thrown clear and did not sustain so much as a scratch.
During his tour of inspection of the Rancitikoi County, the Minister <f Public Works (lion. K. S. William?) visited the metal crushing works at Kakariki. He expressed himself as being amazed at the comprehensiveness of the plant, which was turning out first-class material for all classes of work. Mrs. Gord m Mcßae, of Hnnterville, has returned home from a holiday spent in the South Islan I. During the visit of the Highways Board to Rangitikei this week one of Jne member. Mr. A. E. Jull. stated that they looked to this county, with its size, importance and wealthj to set a high stan-lard. and he was glad to state that this if was doing. The chairman of the board. Mr. C. J McKenzie congratulated the County Council on the satisfactory condition of its 82! miles of main highways.
