HUTT VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL CONCERT
A toncert given by the pupils of Hutt Valley High School proved to be an unqualified success. Mr. Kidron, principal, brought before the audience the fact that all the items were "team” work, and not individual items, despite the fact that talented individuals could have performed, as he and the staff were desirous of showing the results of work done in other lines besides in those of a studious nature. The result of this decision led to a programme consisting of that charming fantasy, "The Maker of Dreams," the characters being taken as follow:—Pierrot. Miss Katharine Baskette; Pierrette, Mias Gwen Slack; The Dream-maker. Miss Avis Elliott. These youthful performers brought a fresh charm to this already unusual style of playlet. An extract from "Vanity Fair" was given acceptably by the junior dramatic class, the characters being taken by Misses Evison and Lowry, and Masters Andrews, Hutchinson, and Fry. The "Trial Scene” from "Merchant of Venice,” was given with artistic finish, Portia (J. Giesen), the Duke (M. Robb, Bassanio (G. Slack), Grasiano (L. Mawron), Salerio (B. Knox), aud Nerissa (M. Turner) l gave capable conceptions of the characters entrusted to them, while K. Baskette gave an outstanding performance as Antonio, as did also F. Hastings as Shylock. Folk-dancing by the girls, and a physical drill display by the boys, brought to g close a much appreciatedprogramme, the first presented to the public by this rapidly growing college.
