TROUBLE OVER A CAR
HIRE-PURCHASE AGREEMENT. Dominion Special. Christchurch, December 2. H. H. Cook and Company, Ltd., land agents, brought an action against W. L. and H. E. Shiel, trading as Shiel’s Garage, Dunedin, before Mr. Justice Stringer, in the Supreme Court to-day. Plaintiffs claimed that Herbert Henry Cook, a director of the firm, agred to purchase a car from defendants for £535, trading in another car . for £230, and giving two promissory notes for £152 10s. each ■for the balance. Defendants later seized the car, claiming that Cook had broken the terms of the hire-pur-chase agreement, under which they claimed the car was sold. Cook alleged that he had signed a second document, not knowing its contents, and asked for the return of the car and compensation. After lengthy evidence had been heard the parties came to an agreement whereby plaintiffs would pay the first instalment and give security for the second. His Honour said that Cook was not entitled to compensation, and must pay his own costs.
