A THIEF’S NAME

SUPPRESSION REFUSED BY MAGISTRATE “THE ONLY PUNISHMENT” Dominion Special. e Christchurch, December 2. “This youth made a decisive and de; liberate effort to break the declaration that he made when he joined the Postal Department, and the only punishment that can be given him is the reprobation of his fellow men.” This remark was made at the Magistrate’s Court this morning by Mr. E. D. Mosley, S.M., who has just come to Christchurch, when Mr. Araodeo applied for the suppression of the name of a young Postal officer who had pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing a registered letter mail bag. The Magistrate said that he would not suppress the name of a public officer who was in a position of trust.

Mr. Amodeo: There was a similar case before the Supreme Court a short time ago, and the name was suppressed then. Mr. Mosley: It is, of course, a matter for individual Magistrates, but I have strong opinions on the matter. This boy had no temptation. Mr. Amodeo: He was only earning £6 a month, an dhe had to pay £2 10s. a month board and to clothe and keep himself on the rest.

The Magistrate: That often has to be done on less. The question.of suppression is for individual Magistrates and Judges. We all bow to the opinion of the Supreme Court, but we have our own opinions. Mr. Amodeo’s application was refused.
