TECHNICAL SCHOOL

BREAK-UP CEREMONY. Palmerston North, December 2. The breaking-up ceremony in connection with the Palmerston North Technical School was held, this evening at the Opera House, when there was a large attendance. In presenting his annual report the director (Mr G G Hancox) stated that the total number of students enrolled was 1056, of which 718 were free place aud 338 paying pupils. During part of the second term the actual roll number was LOGO students. Altogether there were 113 classes formed, and a total of 13 teachers. That the standard ol work was being well, maintained was shown by the following passes and awards:—Proficiency, 25; competency, 15; senior free place, .76; partial matriculation, 2; partial engineering preliminary, 1; partial accountancy preliminary, 1; accountancy subjects, 7; Public Service entrance, 2, partial pass teachers’ D, 1; city and guilds, 5; registered plumbers, 1; invalid cookery certificate, 7; Pitman’s speed shorthand certificates, 38; Pitman’s typing certificates, 31; Pitman’s shorthand typing certificates, 5; Manawatu A. and P. Show awards, 20 first prizes, 25 second, 20 third. Mr. J. A. Nash. M.P.. Chairman of the Iliprli School aud Technical School Board of Governors. who occupied the chair, dealt with the work of the institution during the year and after traversing various educational matters congratulated the scholars upon their work and the director and- staff on the manner in which they had carried out their duties. An address was then delivered by Mr. F. C. Isaacs, late Inspector of Technical Schools, who spoke of the important place occupied by Technical Institutions which, he said, was on an equal, if not a greater footing, than the High Schools. He recalled bis early association with the Technical Schoo] in Palmerston North and said that its rapid strides was convincing evidence of its popuarity. Prizes won by the scholars during the year were then presented.
