The Minister of Agriculture (Hon. O J. Hawken) left for Wanganui yesterday afternoon on account of a family bereavement. He is expected to return to Wellington to-morrow. The Minister of Health (Hou. J. A. Young) will leave on Saturday for Waipukurau and Napier to open officially new nurses’ homes at those places. He will return to Wellington on Monday night. The Hon. J. Barr, M.L.C., of Canterbury, arrived in Wellington from the north yesterday. Air. Barr was one of the New Zealand representatives at the recent Empire Parliamentary Congress in Australia. i
Mr. J. Mackenzie, Wellington district secretary of the Hotel Workers’ Industrial Union, is at present confined to his home by illness. A Press Association message from Feilding reports the death of Mr. W. G. Haybittie, an ex-Mayor of Feilding, an ex-president of the Jockey Club, an ex-chairman of the Rangitikei Sawmillers’ Association, and a prominent Freemason. He was the oldest resident in the Manchester block.
The ex-New Zealand Rugby football representative, A. White, who was a member of tlie famous 1924 team, is moving from Southland to Canterbury, having accepted a business appointment in Christchurch.
Mr. A. Seed, appointed to the Council of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce as representative of the Federated Sawmillers’ Association, was welcomed at Tuesday night’s meeting by the president (Mr. J. R. Simpson).
A message from bur special correspondent in Christchurch states that at the opening of the Christchurch wool sale yesterday Mr. T. J. Maling, president of the New Zealand Woolbrokers’ Association referred to the loss all interested in the wool trade had suffered by the death of Mr. Walter Hill, who had been president Of the New Zealand Woolbuyers’ Association. As a mark of respect the occupants of the benches and tlie gallery stood in silence for a few moments.
