RATEPAYERS SANCTION PURCHASE MAYOR PLEASED WITH RESULT The proposal of the Eastbourne Borough Council to borrow £BOOO to purchase the fleet of motor-buses running between Eastbourne and the. city was sanctioned by 249 votes to 71 at a poll of the ratepayers taken yesterday. The security for the loan is a rate of one and one-sixth of a penny in the £1 over a term of twenty years on the unimproved value of rateable propertv in the borough. The fleet comprises eight buses, which the vendors are prepared to dispose of at £7650, while £lOO was allowed for the purchase of tools and sundries, and £250 for the cost of raising the Joan. There were 838 ratepayers on the roll, and out of these 321 exercised' their rite to vote. Details arc:—

Majoritv for, 178. Satisfaction at the result was expressed by the Mayor of Eastbourne, Mr* H M. Jones, last evening. “It clearlv indicates,” he said, “that the ratepavers have given due consideration to the proposals put forward by the council, and also considered the council's record as administrators before coming to a decision. In fact, it is equivalent to a vote of confidence in the present council.” Mr. Jones also stated that the thanks of the council were due to those ratepayers wh'> had stood behind it. Ihe Mayor mentioned' that the buses would be taken over at the earliest opportunitv, although, according to law, at least °1 da vs had to elapse before any definite steps in this direction could be taken. In taking over the bus service it would be the earnest endeavour of the council to prove that the move was a wise one, while efforts would also be made to remedy any losses on the ferry service.
