DISTINGUISHED NEW ZEALANDER
SIR CHARLES TODHUNTER RETURNS Dominion Special. Christchurch. December 1. Sir Charles George Todhunter, K.C.5.1., arrived here to-day on a holiday visit to his mother. He is the second New Zealander - who lias been knighted for his services in India. The other was Sir William Sinclair Marris, Governor of the united provinces' of Agra and Oudh. Sir Charles Todhunter joined the Indian Civil Service in 1887. and has been chiefly identified with’ Customs administration. He- was knighted in 1921. “India certainly has her problems,” states Sir Charles, “but from what 1 have seen of Australia, they have ns big if not bigger ones there.” Sir Charles states that the biggest test will come from India in 1929. when the period of the present administration ends. A Royal Commission will. then sit to consider the whole question of Government. A third of India is at present ruled bv native rulers. The- cabled advice regarding the Bolshevik menace from tlie north has not been overrated, that in itself is one of the problems which is facing the Government of India.
