HEAVY FINES IMPOSED Dominion Special. . Christchurch, pecember 1. To-day James Fearon, of Woolston, ' was charged, at Lyttelton, before’Mr. ; •H. A. Young, S.M., with carrying on i the business or occupation of a bookmaker. Six other charges were preferred against Fearon of laying bets ■ in connection with the Waikato Hunt < ..(Club's meeting and the Waverley Racing Club’s meeting. Accused pleaded not guilty. • ' The Magistrate found Fearon guilty p on two charges of laying totalisator. ' 1 odds, and inflicted a fine of £2O on ' each charge. On four other similar i charges Fearon was convicted and ; was ordered to come up for sentence when called upon within twelve months. The charge of carrying on business' as a bookmaker was withdrawn. , , , , Sergeant McHolm stated that book- ! '-makers on the waterfront were “mak--1 ing it too hot.” There were about four bookmakers on the waterfront, and Fearon was the first to be caught. ' Fearon, he would say, was quite re- | ’ $ spectable and honest.
