ITALY’S SUPER-LINERS
SECRET DEVICE FOR INCREASING SPEED CHALLENGE TO ENGLAND’S TRANS-ATLANTIC TRADE Rome, November 29. Experts are intrigued at the nature of super-liners, the first mention of which was made by ■ Signor Mussolini in an interview. • , . > They are being built at Genoa, and will be between 35,000 and 40,000 tons displacement. The liners have a secret . device for increasing speed to 40 knots, the invention of an Italian . naval officer. Some believe it consists of a belt of thin steel with a. ball-bearing device for greatly diminishing the impact of the waves. Moreover, it is stated that they may carry propcllors amidships. This is regarded as one of Italy’s most sensational efforts under Signor Mussolini’s active impulse aiming primarily at the capture of the Mediterranean passenger service, and being also a direct challenge at England’s trans-Atlantic trade.
