RIVER EROSION

A MAIN ROAD MENACED. , Dominion Special. Carterton, November 29. A serious menace to Hie main road, between Carterton and Greytowu, is apparent at the northern approach to the VVaiohine Bridge, tu which tbe Featherston and Wairarana South County Councils are interested. The Waiohine river has for some considerable time been veering to the north bank, and slowlv undermining the low bank above the approach. Just above this point the Mangatariri stream joins the Waiohine and in very ordinary Hoods the fributaiy stream is now backed right across Swamp road and floods neighbouring properly. It is not beyond the realms of possibility, if immediate steps are not taken bv the authorities interested, that the \Vaiohine in heavy flood, reinforced by the Mangatariri, will breach the main road below Ude’s Hill and then leave the bridge high and dry.
