LECTURE BY DANISH PIANIST. An instructive and entertaining lecture on Scandinavian music was given on Friday last at the Wellington lechnical College by Mr. Haagon Helenbergh, a celebrated Danish Pianist who is visiting the Dominion. Mr. Ilotenbergh traced the development of the typically Scandinavian school of music from the earliest folk songs and folk dances through different phases till it reached the high standing of Greig, Sinning, Sibelius, Nordraak and others. The pleasure of Mr. Holenbergh s lecture was greatly enhanced by his wonderful interpretive ability tn the pianoforte He caught the spirit of the Northlands, tho rugged beauty of Nordraak, Sinding and Sibelius. ?s well as the quieter moods of Greig. Among other illustrations he played Prelude, Air and Rigandon” from the Holberg Suite, “Lullaby.” “She Dnnces" from Greig. “Valse” (Richard Nordraak). ''Caprice” (Sinding). “Impromptu" (Sibelius), “Woodland Poem” (P. E. Lango-Muller), explaining each selection so that' his hearers could appreciate it intellectually ns well as emotionally. By special request Mr. Holenbergh concluded his lecture and recital by playing Chopin’s “Scherzo in C Sharp Minor. At the conclusion of 'the lecture, Mr. Douglas Tavler,- superintendent of school music, briefly addressed the students and on their behalf thanked Mr. Holenbergh for his instructive lecture and inspiring music. ■■■'
