The chairman of the County Council explained that the settlers had been burdened with the upkeep of a costly road used mainlv bv foreign traffic The countv had been saddled with a liability for £l4OO, the cost of reconditioning the road, and could not meet the bill. Mr. A. E. Jull. of the Highways Board, said that the county was handicapped through the existence of three road districts within its boundaries. This made for inefficient administration. The figures quoted showed that the countv was losing £lOOO in subsidies owing to the dual -system of administration. Mr. H. Wvnyard suggested that the countv might consider asking for a commission to allocate the share of the maintenance costs among the outside districts whose settlers used the road. Mr C. J. McKenzie said the board would give the matter every consideration.
