GIPSY SMITH TAKES UP A COLLECTION
Dominion Special.
Christchurch, November 27
At Gipsy Smith’s meeting last evening a collection was taken up for the relief of unemployment and handed to the Mayor (Rev. J. K. Archer) for distribution. This morning members of the Citizens’ Unemployment Committee conferred with the Mayor, and decided to hand- the amount to the ■ sub-committee in charge of the citizens’ relief depot for distribution in kind. A further meeting of the 'subcommittee will be held on Monday to consider the question of distribution, when a list of the unemployed married men, supplied by the Labour Department, will be before the committee. A deputation, consisting of Messrs. Fournier and Dunkley, interviewed the committee, and vehemently protested against the handing over of the money to. the. Citizens’ Committee for distribution, claiming that they had been responsible for the collection of the monev, and that it should have been handed to them. The amount collected was £2B 4s. 3d.
