THE MAYORALTY
Sir,—Most people concede that the Civic League has been premature m announcing its candidate for the Mayoralty, this term of any, owing to the feeling likely to be generated during the visit of the Duke and Duchess of York, which is about six weeks before the election. The situation has not been eased in the least degree by the controversy which has ensued upon the league’s pronouncement, and it will not be helped at all by the also premature announcement of a possible candidate to represent Labour in the contest that will take place in the last week in April next. Very little is gained by raising all manner of side issues in connection with both the Mayoralty and the City Council nearly five months before the date of election. No other city in New Zealand has been so precipitate in these matters, and in common with a great number of citizens I think that it would be in the interests of the city and common sense to desist from an indulgence in those personalities into which the controversy seems to be drifting at a time when we are approaching that most blessed of all seasons of the year—Christmas. A truce on the matter of the April elections until six weeks before the election would be welcomed by most people, probably by none more than those who have been mentioned as likely candidates for the office of Chief Magistrate of the city for the ensuing two years.—l am, etc., GIVIS.
