LONDON’S SURPLUS CHURCHES
REDUCTION OF PARISHES PROPOSAL REJECTED BY HOUSE OF COMMONS Bv Telegraph press association Copyright. (Rec. November 26, 7.10 p.m.) London, November 26. In the House of Commons, Lord Hugh Cecil moved that the House should direct that the Union of Bene (ices and Disposal of Churches Bill be presented for the Royal assent. He explained that the measure authorises the sale of the sites of certain London churches. Owing to the loss of Sun day population there were' now fortyseven parishes for 12,000 resident in habitants Nothing would be done without careful inquiry, but if the par ishes in the city were reduced in num ber, funds could be assigned to other churches in the ciiocese of London. The Bill would place a difficult matter in the hands of a commission in full touch with moderate, rational public opinion. Sir T Vansittart Bowater, a former Lord Mayor of London, moved the rejection of the Bill, urging that the object of the measure was to pull down great ancient churches in the city to get money to spend elsewhere Lord Hugh Cecil’s motion was rejected by 121 votes to 27.
