CALEDONIAN CARNIVAL
The great Caledonian Carnival which is to be held at Kilbirnie Reserve will .be officially opened to-day at 3 p.m. ,by His Worship the Mayor (Mr. C. ‘J. B. Norwood), Sir John Luke, and the Chief, Captain R. H. Nimmo. It is anticipated by the directors of the society that the carnival will prove a great attraction to the people of Wellington. Unique attractions are being staged, mainly through the co-opera-tion of the various sports bodies, clubs, societies, bands, etc., who have all responded most willingly to assist the society in the object of the carnival, to raise funds for the building of an up-to-date Caledonian Hall in Wellington. A few of the attractions of the carnival comprise a spectacular fire- ' W’ork display bv the Chinese residents, a. boxing tournament under the aus•’pices of the Wellington Boxing Association, yacht and motor-boat racing by the Evans Bay Yacht and Motor Boat Club, life-saving displays and competitions bv the various surf clubs under the auspices of the R-ev;fl Life Saving Club, and a tug-of-war between teams representing the various commercial and industrial houses are on the programme. There will be a galaxy of side-shows, many of them from the Dunedin Exhibition, including a mer-ry-go-round and ocean wave. The ground will be brilliant!v lighted at nights and the various bands will be in attendance throughout the carnival. Two fancv dress dances for children will be held i" the dance pavilion. The dance navilion will be onen every evening, with a full jazz orchestra.
