MAGISTRATE’S COURT
POLICE, CIVIL AND BY-LAW
CASES Mr. E. S.M., dealt with the police cases in the Magistrate's Court yesterday. Anne MeCarthey, a middle-aged domestic, was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment on a charge of "oeing found by night without lawful excuse, but in circumstances not disclosing the intent to commit any other offence, in an enclosed area situated at 117 Thorndon Quay. Convicted on a charge of attempting to commit suicide by cutting an artery in his arm, a middle-aged man whose name was suppressed was ordered to come up for sentence when called upon within twelve months, and also to pay the sum of £b for medical expenses, incurred during his stay in the Public Hospital. For stealing a gentleman’s silver wristlet watch, valued at A'-f 10s., the property of James Lawton, Thomas William Doolan, a salesman (aged 40). was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment with hard labour, the sentence to bo served'at the expiration of three months’ imprisonment he is now undergoing for theft. A remand until December 2 was granted in the case of Arthur Cecil Peters, a chef (aged 39), who was charged with stealing a gladstone bag valued at <£4 10s„ the property of a person or persons unknown.- Bail was allowed accused in the sum of X 75, with one surety of a similar amount. BY-LAW CASES Breaches of the by-laws were dealt with by Mr. J. H. Salmon, S.M. For passing stationary trams, William Beard, Lawrence Crai" and Harry Haywood were each fined £1 and costs. John E. Cave was convicted and ordered to pay 7s. costs for failing to obtain a heavy traffic license. Clifford Watson and Stanley H. Walker were each fined .£1 and costs for driving their vehicles on the wrong side of the street. For a similar offence John Taylor was fined 10s. and costs. For speeding in the city, Howard Prince was fined £2 and costs. CIVIL BUSINESS Judgment by default in favour of plaintiff was given by Mr. W. G.
