. Mr. L. Holmes, of Auckland, is at present on a visit to Palmerston North. Mr. P. Hunter, of Porangahu, Hawke’s Bay, has been admitted to hospital, suffering from a serious illness. 'Mr. J. Evans, of Dunedin, is a visitor to Palmerston North. Mr. McQueen, the recently-appointed stationmaster at Levin, was welcomed at the last meeting of the Levin Chamber of Commerce by the president (Mr. T. F. Gibbs). Messrs. J. W. G. Brodie and J. R. Sinclair, of Wellington, were visitors to Palmerston North this week. Mr. J. C. Davidson, of Pahiatua, has returned home from a visit to Australia.
Mr. J. C. Young, of Palmerston North, is at present on a visit to Christchurch. Mr. J. S. Shimmin, of the Auckland Normal School, has been appointed headmaster of the Eketahuna District High School. Mr. W. H. Hall has returned to Palmerston North after a holiday spent in Auckland.
Forty years’ service in the force are to the credit of Constable Michael Madden, of Palmerston North, who is retiring on superannuation. Before coming to Palmerston North thirteen years ago, Constable Madden was stationed at ‘ .'amarii and Wanganui. In view of his retirement, he was made the recipient of a solid leather case for bowls, a pair of bowling shoes, and a silver pencil. Inspector Simpson, who made the presentation, ’referred to the fact that he had first become acquainted, with Constable Madden in Oamaru 35 years ago, and throughout his long service the retiring member of the force had performed his duties well. Other officers added their tributes, and cheers were given for Constable and Mrs. Madden..
