AINSLEE SHIELD AND TAKANO CUP.

Palmerston North, November 24.

The Ainslee Shield (bowling) changed hands to-day, when the Northern Club was successful in its challenge with the Palmerston Club. The issue was decided on two matches, the holders of the trophy losing both games. In one contest, Young, Levy, Stallard, and Beattie (s.), defeated Boon, Wall, Bell and Fraser (s.), 26—19. The visitors quickly established a lead and the score was 16—4 in their favour on the ninth head. Five • heads later it changed to 21—8, and Palmerston, securing 3 on the twentieth, made the tally 26—16. The defenders, however, were quite outclassed, and another 3 by Palmerston on the last head made the final score 26—19 in favour of Northern.

In the other contest, Allan, Walker, Thornley and Cunningham (s.), defeated Wilton, Hansel, Goldfinch and Paton (s.), 21—17. On‘ the first four heads, Northern secured a total of 7, and on the ninth lead 11—3. Palmerston scored 4 on the tenth and managed to make honours even at 13 all on the fifteenth. The next three heads brought Nofthern 5, and with the odds in their favour the visitors went through to win, 21—17. Playing on their own green, Northern lost the Takaro Cup to Manawatu, being defeated 22—19. The rinks were Manawatu, Gerrand, Preece, Corbridge and Eckersley (s.) ; Northern, Palmer, Kirk, Rumble, and Arnott (s.). Northern scored 4 on the first head and the next three heads went to Manawatu for a total of 7. Northern drew level on the next, Manawatu drawing ahead again by scoring on the next four heads and raising their aggregate to 13. The home link retaliated by taking the next three heads for 6, the score being 13 all at the twelfth. The eighteenth head found Manawatu leading 19—18, and they added 2 on the nineteenth. The final bead gave Manawatu the victory, 22—19.
