STRANGE INCIDENT
BIG FISH IMPALED ON STEAMER’S PROW
Dominion Special.
Auckland. November 23.
An extraordinary incident during the voyage of the Maunganui trom Sydney compelled the vessel to be hove to foi a few minutes on Monday afternoon. While in the vicinity of the Three Kings the ship’s officers were puzzled to account for a sudden slackening off .in the steamer’s speed. An investigation revealed no sign of an engine-room fault, and the sea was as smooth as glass. It was then that a strange discovery was made. When travelling at full speed the steamer had struck a big blacklist), which, partially severed by the impact, had become impaled on the prow at the water-line. It was evident that the monster fish was prevented from being dislodged _by the pressure of water surging against the bow as the vessel ploughed its way forward. As the obstruction had reduced the steamer’s speed by about two knots, steps were immediately taken to effect its removal. Attempts to harpoon the carcass proved abortive, as the weapons repeatedly missed their mark. Finally it was decided that the only thing to do was to stop tin- ship. This was done, and the water firessere being thus re-hieed the carcass floated off ami was lost in the steamer's wake. The vessel immediately resumed its voyage.
