NEW ZEALAND CRICKET TEAM

APPOINTMENT OF MANAGER

MR. D. REESE DEPRECATES PROPAGANDIST WORK

Dominion Special. Christchurch, November 22. On Saturday the Dunedin “Star” in an editorial stated that while Mr. DReese, chairman of the Management Committee of the New Zealand Cricket Council, was unable to take the position of manager of the team which is going to England next year, he had indicated that Mr. C. G. Wilson, of Wellington, would be the man for the job. Portions of this editorial were telegraphed to two Christchurch papers, if not to other parts of the Dominion. When interviewed to-day Mr. Reese said: “I have not been in Dunedin for several weeks, and I state emphatically that I have never expressed aii opinion or recommended any particular individual for the position. The matter is now receiving the earnest consideration of the Management Committee, and I think it would be in the best interests of the tour if newspapers refrained from advocating certain candidates. The. work of the governing body is sufficiently difficult without it being rendered more so by propaganda of this nature.” “It is common knowledge that the advocacy of certain gentlemen is. arriving from several centres, and it appears as though everybody has a particular favourite for the job as manager,” adds the “Star’s” cricket writer. “Everyone interested in the English tour recognises that the appointment of the manager will be the most important decision the Management Committee will be called upon to make, and as the committee is composed of able and responsible men, it is safe to leave the matter in their hands. At the same time it is to be regretted that this canvassing is in progress, as while it will not injure- the prospects of candidates in the eyes of a fairminded body of men. it certainly will not assist them one iota.”
