SUCCESSFUL FLEET CARNIVAL

There was a large attendance of visitors at the Tepid Baths of the Boys’ Institute on Saturday night, when a fleet carnival was held. Naval uniforms, worn by officers and men from the Dunedin and the Diomede, were prominent. Some good pex-formances were put up, and the events were got off smoothly and without hitch. One of the features of tire evening was tho display of diving given by W. i’ll icks, an ex-champion of New Zealand, who quite delighted the gathering by his neatness and skill. In the open diving competition one competitor is especially worthy of mention, and he is Bose, a boy who hails from Napier, and whose exhibition was nothing short ot masterly. In spite of his youth, lie was placed first in the competition. A race which caused much interest and amusement was the Roman candle race, in which the swimmers Lad to traverse the length of the baths without putting out the lighted taper which each carried in his mouth. Only two competitors carried their torches to the end Both the Dunedin and the Diomede possess swimmers of great ability. The winner of the 220 yards Navy championship, Heaton, is from the Diomede, while Vincent, who secured the second place in this race, is from the Dundin. visitors seemed particularly impressed with the form shown bv the naval men, who certainly performed very creditably. The main event of the evening was a game of water polo between a team from H.M.S. Diomede and the Wellington representative team. The game was referred by Mr. F. Wilton, and he was kept very busy in controlling tho players, who made the pace particularly willing. Wellington won by two goals to nil. , ...
