LEVEL CROSSING ACCIDENT AT TRENTHAM TWO NAVAL MEN INJURED ONE IN SERIOUS CONDITION A level crossing accident occurred last evening on Camp Road, Trentham, as the result of which two men are now in the Wellington Public Hospital. They are: JAMES HASTIE (aged 23), a leading stoker on H.M.S. Diomede, who received a fractured skull and fractured jaw. STANLEY ROBT. CHURCH (aged 23), also a leading stoker on the Diomede, fractured right leg.

It appears that the two meu, who were both in the naval camp at Trentham, were riding a motor-car across the Camp Road line about 6.15 p.m., when they were run down by the train which left Wellington at 5.13. The men were hurled with terrific force for many yards, and their machine was badlv smashed It is stated that the train was approaching Trentham station at a speed not more than 10 miles an hour when the accident occurred. As soon as the collision occurred the train was pulled up and assistance was rendered with all possible speed.

The sailors, who were unconscious and bleeding profusely,' were immediately removed to the camp, where the surgeon of H.M.S. Dunedin attended to them. As they w’ere both in a serious condition, the Trentham Ambulance brought them with all possible haste to the Hospital, where they were admitted at 7.50 p.m. It was reported late last night, that Hastie was in a very serious condition. Church, however, is not in danger.
