BROADCASTING IN ENGLAND
PROPOSAL TO SUBSIDISE NATIONAL OPERA COMPANY
London, November 18.
In view of the recent controversy as to the effect of broadcasting upon the concert world, interest is added by the announcement that the new Broadcasting Corporation will consider a proposal to subsidise a British National Opera Company, which, in return, will agree to broadcast weekly excerpts of grand opera. An opera official states that the company would be unable to exist without a subsidy.—Sydney “Sun” Cable.
[Sir Thomas Beecham recently passed severe strictures otr the effect of broadcasting on grand opera, and said he was going to America, where there was a better appreciation of grand opera than in England.]
