MANAWATU GORGE SLIP
: BLASTING INEFFECTIVE Dominion Special. Palmerston North, November 18. After a blockage of the railway line in the Manawatu Gorge for several weeks, following the huge landslides, explosives were resorted to this morning in an attempt to clear away the debris, but little was achieved. Having removed the permanent way in the vicinity of the proposed operations, the men set about laying the charges, four of which were placed in different parts of the fissured concrete retaining wall, and a fifth in a huge rock at the side of the track. Precautions were taken to suspend all traffic on the road opposite, and then the fuses were lit. All charges functioned, but little change in the hillside, beyond cracks in several directions, was apparent. Another charge was placed in the wall, but was practically ineffective. It is hoped to make a deeper impression with the use of further explosives and sluicing.
