“DUE TO SHEER MUDDLE”
FRAUDULENT OMISSION TO ACCOUNT Dominion Special. Christchurch, November 18. William Francis Halliburton in the Supreme Court to-day pleaded guilty to having received £152 18s. ’ld. from Garrett Fitzgerald and fraudulently omtting to account for the money to the church property trustees also to having stolen the sums of £241- bs. and £260 7s. lid. belonging to Mrs. Alarv S. McArthur. The offences were committed at Ashburton, where Halliburton was in business as a (omnussion C. S. Thomas Icounsel for Halliburton) said that Halliburton had worked up a good agency business at Ashburton. He kept only one set of accounts instead of two. His house of cards fell to the ground and he found that he was insolvent. His trouble was due to sheer muddle. In replv to Mr. Justice Stringer, Mr. Thomas said that Mrs. McArthur was well off. She might almost be called a wealtliv woman. His Honour said that it seemed desirable to give Halliburton an opportunity to rehabilitate himself. He would allow the case to stand over until Monday in order that further inquiries should' be made.
