CATTLE TICK INSPECTION SYSTEM CRITICISED “UNDOUBTED EVIDENCE OF SLACKNESS” BY TELSTHAPU.—PttESS ASSOCIATION Auckland, November 18. The present system of stock inspection to prevent the spread'of tick infection was described as a farce by speakers at the monthly meeting of the Auckland executive oi the tanners' Union last night. Referring to a letter from the Superintendent of the Live Stock Division of the Department of Agriculture, who denied that the cattle at the Westfield saleyards recently were tick-infested to any extent, the chairman, Mr. C. C. Munro, said that he had no hesitation in saying that the details in the letter were contrary to fact. He had seen badly infected cattle in the yards, and the letter was incorrect in saying that only one or two beasts bad a few ticks on them. Mr. L. Martin said that there was undoubted evidence of slackness on someone’s part. This was obvious from the fact that 18 head of prize cattle were refused admittance to the Royal Show on Tuesday. The chairman: When you see cattle standing in the Westfield yards with >-.irs full of ticks what must be the state of the trucks out of which they came? Mr. A. Harding said he hoped that the Director of Agriculture would see that there was no recurrence of infested stock being railed to Auckland from the north. It should be made clear that they were not satisfied. The suggestion by the owner of the group of Jersey cattle excluded from the show owing Io the discovery of tick upon them, that his cows picket! up the pest in a railway truck, was emphatically repudiated yesterday by railway official.-:. At the half-yearly general meeting of the Now Zealand Milking Shorthorn Association, the members referred to the inconvenience caused to' exhibitors at the Royal Show through the inspection of animals for tick. It was stated that some cattle had been inspected three times before being allowed to enter. A resolution was carried requestnr the Royal Society to investigate the matter.
