— •. Dannevirke, November 17.

The Salvation Army met in force on 'Tuesday night to welcome the newly appointed general commander cf the Army in New Zealand, Commissioner Hay, and Mrs Hay. The Mayor (Mr. A. J. C. Runciman) presided and accorded a civic welcome to the visitors, and Rev. H. Daniel (Methodist) welcomed them on behalf cf the ether Churches, stressing the need for unity and for evangelism. The Churches, he felt, were one in doctrine with the Army, and the only difference lay in. their methods. The Qommissimer spoke of his experiences in other lands and of his long connection, extending ever 44 years, with the Salvation Army, stating that- he took little interest in leligion until he had attended the Army, though he had i received a good sound training in the Presbyterian Church, in which he had been brought r-p. Mrs.. 4 Hay and Brigadier Saunders, of Wellington, who accompanied the Commisisioner. also -spoke. In the afternoon Mrs. Hay was entertained to lea by the Women’s Home League, when words of welcome were spoken bv the secretary. Mrs. Geard. and Mrs. LieutenantColonel Carmichael, of Palmerston North. A tea for the local <orps was ■also held between the two gatherings, thus enabling the Commissiaaer to come . into close touch with the local workers , After a morning of cold • ind and blustery showers, the Dannevirke Public Hospital was favoured with -a ’.’ery pleasant . afternoon on the occasion rf its annual garden party. There was a capital attendance and the funds for the provision of extra comforts and Christmas gifts for the patients hon Iff benefit very considerably. _ The Dannevirke Municipal Band .was in attendance and concert items were given by Mesdames 11. Shanty, Paton, Anteljff nnd Forsyth. Messrs. J. L Harris, ,T. W. Hood, and i.C. Lidington. Highland dances were given (reel nnd fling) by four little girls Jean and Mollie Budie’ daughters of the medical superintendent, Bettv Gillespie and Una Evans.
