Mr. O. Nelson, of Hawke’s Bay, is soendine a holiday in Auckland. P Mr. K. B. Gothard, of Woodville, who has been an inmate of the Dannevirke Hospital for about nine weeks, is progressing favourably, and snouiu be able to return to his home in the near future. Mr. G. S. Crisp, late manager of the Bank of Australasia at Kaitaia, North Auckland, has been appointed manager of the Levin branch, and has taken up
his duties. In recognition of Ins valuable services to the school, Mr. E. A. Gumbley, of Castlecliff School, Wanganui was met by the members of the teaching staff . and school committee and x presented .. with a case of pipes, best wishes being expressed for his success in Invercargill, where be will reside. The death occurred at the T ararua Private Hospital, Pahiatua, yesterday morning of Mr. Alfred Edward Verry. The deceased gentleman, who was 55 \ years of age and unmarried, was born at Wakefield, and was the second son .of the late Mr. and Mrs. George Verry, two of the early pioneer settlers of the Nelson district. Mr. and .Mrs. Verry and' family settled . in . Konini in 1890, ' where they acquired some very rich ' dairying land, which is still in the ' possession of the family. The late Mr. Verry >whc is survived by four brothers and an equal number of sisters, was a man of the highest character, and had earned the respect and esteem of every member of the community. Of a quiet and unassuming nature, he was full of generous impulses, and was the life and soul of every movement .which made for the advancement. of the district ’in which he lived. Although his death was not unexpected, the end came 4 with remarkable quickness, and was a shock to the cotnmujiity. The late Mr. Verry was president of the Pahiatua A. aiid P Association, vice-president of the Pahiatua branch of the New. Zealand Farmers’ Union, a director of the Rexdale Dairy Company, a director of the Pahiatua Farmers’ Association, a member of the Carnival Park Domain Board, and r. vice-president of the Pahiatua Horticultural and Industrial Society. A member of the Church of England, he took a very active interest in church matters, and by hi? death the Anglicans in this district will lose one of their greatest workers. The funeral will take place to-morrow. ■■ Mr. J. H. Salmon, S.M., of Wellington, has been authorised to' exercise jurisdiction in the Children’s Court at Palmerston North and Levin.
