POINTSMEN’S GLOVES
NONE BUT GERMAN MADE AVAILABLE Dominion Special. Auckland, November 15. With placards all round them bearing the words "Buy New Zealandmade Goods,” Auckland City Council traffic employees stand on point duty to-day and direct British and foreign motor-cars with gloves stamped “Made in Germany.” "White cotton gloves are an essential part of a point duty man’s uniform,” said Mr. G. R. Hogan (chief traffic inspector) to-day, “and the onlv gloves we could buy were the ones being used at the moment, but, of course, just as soon as we are able to procure suitable cotton gloves for the point duty then they will be British goods. During the' past two and a half months the purchasing department of the City Council Jias tried throughout New Zealand, Australia, and Canada to buy suitable gloves, but the required material could not be obtained A Christchurch firm was asked to supply gloves, but we were advised that they could not make them. An order was withheld until three days before the men went on point duty. We were supplied with many samples The men could not stand at intersections directing traffic with gloves covered with frills and lace, nor could we give them wedding gloves, and that was the only type obtainable. When we were forced to buv at the last moment we were compelled to buy up the only gloves available, cotton German gloves at Is. 3d. a pair. Even these are unsuitable, and are not the type necessary for the work.” - ,
